Creative nonfiction is also accepted for the bi-monthly Literary Orphans issue on the main website; just keep your story to 5,000 words max. Plus, teens under 19, there’s a category for you, too. Flash Fiction Online allows for slightly longer flash stories — between 500 and 1,000 words. Its editors like sci-fi and fantasy but are open to all genres (except for nonfiction and poetry!).

For the pieces that we decline, either from the Maybe pile or from the start, there’s usually something missing, something tangible or intangible that as readers we just aren’t connecting with. We might receive ten pieces that deal with the same subject, say the death of a parent, and are forced to choose just one. Sometimes it’s subject matter or voice that’s offensive. Sometimes the writing just doesn’t shine as strong as other submissions, and sometimes we really like a piece, but with limited space, we reluctantly decline. IseleMagazineis committed to nuance and the platforming of a range of experiences, identities, and realities. Hence why there are no limits to the medium, be it flash fiction, short fiction, poetry, non-fiction, visual work, hybrid works, etc.
R-rated content is OK, but stay away from anything too racy, gory or obscene. Story Magazine is, you guessed it, all about the story, whatever shape it takes. Another one high on the prestige list, The Georgia Review features a wide variety of essays, fiction, book reviews, and more across a wide range of topics. You can read specific requirements for each in the submission guidelines, but the common theme among them all is quality, quality, quality. We publish personal essays, short stories, poems, and black-and-white photography in print and online in our monthly magazine.

This is partly due to regulations such as the 1930 Hays Code that barred studios from producing material showing “offenses” such as race mixing and LGBTQ+ people, among others. Such regulations meant that queer characters had to be coded and not explicitly confirmed as queer.
